Repairing the skin barrier requires consistency. Our lab
identifies five key interventions to support its recovery and
function:
1. Use Gentle Cleansing Technologies
Opt for formulations free from harsh
detergents, fragrances, and irritating additives. Instead,
prioritise technologies that offer antioxidant support while
respecting dermal barriers.
NIOD’s Low-Viscosity
Cleaning Ester (LVCE) isolated sugar and avocado
esters to remove dirt and makeup. It also contains vitamin E,
which helps support the lipid components of the skin barrier,
reinforcing its protective properties against external
stressors.
2. Replenish Skin’s Moisture Reserves Daily
Select moisturising formulations that contain
skin-identical lipids, such as
ceramides, fatty
acids, and cholesterol. These compounds form the lipid matrix, a
protective component of the skin barrier that fills in the gaps between skin
cells to deter irritants from entering.
Humectants such as
glycerin or
hyaluronic acid,
found in NIOD’s Multi-Molecular
Hyaluronic Complex (MMHC2), can also support moisture retention
within the skin
barrier. They act as
water magnets, effectively holding water inside the skin to
promote overall hydration.
3. Limit Exfoliation Frequency
If you’re experiencing signs of skin
barrier damage, pause exfoliation and focus on reparative
technologies before reintroducing stronger active
ingredients.
4. Minimise Barrier Disruptors
Formulations that contain alcohol, synthetic
fragrances, or essential oils can further compromise the
skin barrier. Suspend use until skin equilibrium
is re-established.
5. Defend Against UV Stress
UV exposure accelerates barrier degradation.
Use a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher every day to shield your
skin from the impact of UV rays.
Formulations such as NIOD’s
Superoxide
Dismutase Saccharide Mist (SDSM2) offer antioxidant support to protect
against the damaging effects of stressors resulting from UV
exposure.
